Acid Resistant Polymer Films for Surface Protection PhD Scholarship

This project will investigate novel pathways towards producing acid resistant polymer particle films for the coating and protection of commercially relevant surfaces, commencing with marble. The initial phase of the project will be divided over two themes, which will begin concurrently. In the first theme, the lateral and normal morphology of the film formed by commercially available surface protection products will be characterised with high resolution using a suite of techniques including scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. This will provide an indication of structures to be targeted in the second theme, which will develop novel acid resistant polymer films as protective coatings, which could be polymer particle composites. The nanoscale structure of the films will be correlated with performance, which will enable refinement of the film structure towards a commercially viable product. Methods for applying the film will be developed via systematic investigations of the kinetics of wetting, spreading and drying of the polymer composite layer.
