Linda Cotton (Vatskalis) Memorial Scholarship
The purpose of this scholarship is to enable a student enrolled in a unit in the Bachelor of Laws degree course which includes discussion of Indigenous issues, to undertake a project that relates to the student’s demonstrated interest in the relationship between the Australian legal system and the Indigenous peoples of Australia. Projects might include, for example, an internship or volunteer work or work experience with an Indigenous organization. Possible use of funds could include, for example, travel and accommodation costs.
The scholarship is available to currently enrolled students in the Bachelor of Laws course, or in a combined course which includes a course for the degree of Bachelor of Laws, who have completed the following units:
- Contract I and II;
- Criminal Law I and II;
- Torts I and II;
- Legal Process; and
- Property I and II.
The selection committee may award a scholarship or scholarships not exceeding $900.00 per annum in aggregate. Each scholarship is tenable for one year.
Selection Criteria
The scholarship will be awarded to the applicant who, in the opinion of the selection committee, best demonstrates:
- the need for financial assistance to engage in a project that will enhance the student's knowledge of the relationship between the Australian legal system and the Indigenous peoples of Australia;
- an interest in social justice; and
- an interest in having Indigenous issues more widely debated, understood and addressed.
How to apply
Applications must include:
- a statement (of no more than two or three typed A4 pages in length) by the applicant as to eligibility for selection and addressing each of the selection criteria and a proposal for the use of the scholarship funds; and
- references (each of approximately one typed A4 page in length) from at two referees who collectively are able to address, from their personal knowledge of the applicant, all of the selection criteria.
