UWA SWANS Scholarships

UWA SWANS Scholarship changes in 2010

UWA SWANS Scholarships will continue to be awarded by UWA in 2010, but it is likely that changes will be made to the eligibility criteria, pending details of the new Student Start-Up and Relocation Scholarships offered through Centrelink (currently subject to passage through Australia Federal Parliament).

More information will be posted here when the outcome of legislation has been resolved.

Basic information

UWA SWANS Scheme scholarships are provided by the University of Western Australia. Up to 200 SWANS may be awarded in an academic year, with an additional six UWA Alumni SWANS scholarships being provided for the first time in 2009.

UWA SWANS scholarships are valued at $2,207 in 2009 and payable for up to four years.

If you are applying for a UWA SWANS Scholarship, you must choose between a 'Cash Payment' or 'Partial Fee Waiver' award. The Scholarships Office has been advised that UWA SWANS Partial Fee Waiver Scholarships will not be considered as income by Centrelink. However, UWA SWANS Cash Payment Scholarships will be counted as income by Centrelink in means-tested benefits.

Eligibility

To be eligible for a UWA SWANS Scheme scholarship a student must be:

  • an Australian or New Zealand citizen or the holder of an Australian permanent visa (including Humanitarian visa)
  • a Commonwealth Supported Higher Education Contribution Scheme student, as defined in the Higher Education Support Act (2003)
  • in receipt of a means tested Commonwealth income support payment (such as Youth Allowance, AUSTUDY or ABSTUDY), or provide a statement demonstrating financial hardship; and
  • enrolled as a full-time student unless there are exceptional circumstances which prevent full time enrolment.

Students enrolled in a Graduate Diploma of Education or an eligible Masters course (see list below) may also apply subject to meeting the other eligibility criteria above.

Undergraduate applicants must not have already completed the requirements of a course of study regarded by the University to be equivalent to or higher than an Australian bachelor’s award, unless each such award is a prerequisite to the student’s current undergraduate course of study and there is no alternative pathway into that course of study at the University
