The University of Western Australia (UWA) has a long tradition of excellence in the field of Chinese Studies. Chinese language and studies have been taught on campus for many years at both undergraduate and postgraduate level with the number of quality students in each area increasing steadily. The research staff are internationally recognised experts in their respective fields. The last five Australian ambassadors to China are all graduates of UWA. UWA was also the first institution in Australia to establish a Confucius Institute in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Beijing, and Zhejiang University. UWA therefore offers a supportive and stimulating environment for postgraduate studies on contemporary China. PurposeThe purpose of the scholarship is to further interest in and study into contemporary China and to enable an eligible postgraduate student to pursue research into contemporary China at The University of Western Australia. ValueThe annual value of the scholarship is $20,000. A relocation allowance of $3,000 is provided to assist the student in travel and relocation from China to Australia. A further sum of $10,000 is available if a student is successful in applying for a six-month extension. Eligibility RequirementsTo be eligible to apply for a scholarship an applicant must: (a) be a citizen of a country other than Australia or New Zealand; (b) be a graduate of a recognised university; and (c) be eligible to enrol or be enrolled as a full-time student in a PhD and intend to pursue research in Chinese Studies in the discipline of Asian Studies within the School of Social and Cultural Studies in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at the University. To be considered for this scholarship, you must have completed an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) test and achieved the minimum results – an overall score of 6.5, with a minimum score of 6.0 for Speaking and Listening and a minimum score of 6.5 for Reading and Writing. You must have you completed a test of English Proficiency within the past two years for your results to be acceptable.
