The University of Western Australia will offer fifty-percent (50%) fee waiver scholarships to Indian higher degree by research students for commencement in 2010.Eligible Indian applicants, who can commit to paying fifty-percent (50%) of their full tuition fees to undertake a Higher Degree by Research (HDR) at The University of Western Australia, may apply for an India Scholarship for International Research Fees (India SIRF). This scholarship will cover fifty-percent (50%) of all tuition fees for up to 2 years for a Masters by Research degree and up to 4 years for a PhD, as well as Overseas Student Health Cover, and a full living allowance scholarship. The current international student tuition fee scale can be found at http://www.studyat.uwa.edu.au/postgrad/international/fees. Eligibility CriteriaIn order to apply for an India SIRF, applicants must: • be citizens of India; • be able to commit to funding personally or have a commitment from a recognised sponsor fifty percent (50%) of the full tuition fees for up to 2 years for a Masters by Research degree and up to 4 years for a PhD; • demonstrate English language proficiency to an acceptable standard (see http://www.studyat.uwa.edu.au/postgrad/doctorates/admission/english for more information). Please note that all English test results must normally have been obtained within the last two years. • have completed a relevant undergraduate degree requiring at least four years of study with First Class Honours, or the equivalent • be prepared to enrol as a full-time candidate for a higher degree by research Required Proof of Financial SupportIndian students applying for the India SIRF scholarships must attach evidence of financial support in accordance with the usual requirements of the International Centre, as follows: • private students supported by themselves or their family must attach a signed statement by parent/provider or bank institution to confirm that they have funds to pay 50% of the Fees for up to 2 years for a Masters by Research degree and up to 4 years for a PhD • applicants who are supported by their home government/university must attach written proof on official Government or University letterhead confirming the amount and duration of funding • applicants who are sponsored by their employer must attach a letter from the employer confirming the amount and duration of funding Please Note: Indian applicants who cannot provide documentary proof of financial support for 50% of the Full Fees will not be eligible for the India SIRFs, but they may be considered for the SIRFs/IPRS in the usual ranking process. Schools or Faculties must provide full living allowances (current stipend of $25,427pa in 2009) with all IPRS/SIRF scholarships The UWA Scholarships Committee does not allow any International Scholarship applicants to guarantee their own living allowances. Tenure of ScholarshipsThe duration of the India SIRF scholarships is up to two years for Masters by Research degrees and up to four years for PhDs. In order to be offered an India SIRF, applicants must have guaranteed funding for fifty percent (50%) of the their tuition fees for up to 2 years for a Masters by Research degree and up to 4 years for a PhD. Living Allowance supportSuccessful India SIRF applicants will be provided with a full living allowance scholarship. Living allowances are payments made to students while they are studying to cover living expenses. Scholarship students are only permitted to work limited hours and must enrol full-time so it is extremely important that students have a source of funds on which to live while they carry out their studies. In 2009 the living allowance scholarship is $25,427 per annum tax-free. Application Process and Time ScaleApplications open on 2 June 2009, and close on 14 August 2009. These scholarships will be for study commencing in 2010. Late applications will NOT be accepted. After completion of the online application form, all hardcopy supporting documentation, including English test results, must be sent to the Scholarships Office by 28 August 2009. Documents received after 28/08/09 will be too late to be used in the ranking and selection process. If you meet all admission requirements and are selected to receive a half-tuition fee scholarship from The University of Western Australia (UWA), then you will receive an offer letter. Successful applicants will normally be expected to enrol by 31 March 2010. Application InstructionsApplications for India SIRFs are by online form. Applicants who have previously applied for a Scholarship through iAthena (such as IPRS/SIRF) and wish to transfer their application to the latest round should e-mail internationalscholarships@uwa.edu.au to request the transfer.
Please include 'Transfer previous application' in the e-mail subject heading. You will have the opportunity to review and change your application, include new documents and so on. You can also choose to transfer across existing referee reports or nominate new referees. You MUST resubmit your application and sign and submit a new Application Confirmation Form but will only have to submit hard copy documents that were not previously lodged with the Graduate Research and Scholarships Office.
