The Dean's Postgraduate Award Scheme, introduced in 2003, is an initiative of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. This scheme was established with the aim of enriching the research experiences and development of the faculty's postgraduate students, and enhancing the nexus between research and teaching, as expressed in the Faculty's Operational Priorities and Strategic Plans.
Approximately nine awards of $1000 each will be made annually.
The Awards do not replace funding for research, associated activities and infrastructure that have been deemed essential to the completion of an individual Masters or PhD research proposal as approved by the Board of the Postgraduate Research School at UWA, and as defined under the terms of the Higher Education Act.
These awards are intended to enhance research and research training for postgraduates by supporting the publication of postgraduate research work in recognised scholarly journals. The purposes to which award funds may be put are outlined below.
Eligibility
Students who wish to apply for the Dean's Postgraduate Awards must:
- be currently enrolled as PhD or Masters research students within the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences at UWA (internal candidates only)
- already have their research proposal submitted and approved by the Board of the Postgraduate Research School prior to the closing date for applications
Both full-time and part-time Masters (Research) and PhD students may apply, whether or not in receipt of a scholarship.
Students who have received an award or grant within the Faculty for a publication may not submit that same publication for the Dean’s Postgraduate Award Scheme.
Eligible candidates may apply for a Dean’s Postgraduate Award in any year, however, recipients of an award are not eligible to apply again.
Use of Award Funds
The Awards seek to foster and reward publication of postgraduate research in refereed scholarly journals and may be used for any purpose that enhances the research and research training of the postgraduate student: this would include but is not confined to conference and/or research travel; conference fees; specialist books, film or equipment; computer equipment, etc.
Selection Criteria
Applications will be assessed on the basis of:
- the publication of a scholarly article, or formal acceptance for publication of an article, in the calendar year 2009 in a ranked journal (ERA, ERIH) and/or an indexed journal (Thomson Reuters ISI, SSI)
- the relative ranking of the journal in which the article has been published or accepted
The Selection Committee for the Awards will be convened by the Associate Dean (Research). The Committee reserves the right to make fewer awards in the event that there are insufficient suitable applications in any year.
